Clinical Learning for Students, Visitors, and Shadows

We have learning affiliations with many health professions schools and residencies, Learners from physician assistant, midwifery, osteopathy and medical programs come to Kaiser Permanente Washington for clinical rotations, clerkships, electives and sub-internships. Over 150 physicians, midwives, and physician assistant members of the Washington Permanente Medical Group are involved in teaching.

Undergraduate Learners

We prioritize our educational partnerships with programs in the Pacific Northwest, the 5-state WWAMI medical education network, and the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine. Washington Permanente Medical Group is a leading employer of Physicians,  Physician Assistants and Certified Nurse Midwives and offers a highly collaborative environment for learning. Professional medical training programs must have an existing training agreement with KP Washington before scheduling rotations. Visiting Residents

Our clinics are training sites for many Washington residencies, with electives from Sports Medicine to Pediatrics to Radiation Oncology. In line with Kaiser Permanente Washington's mission to improve the health of the communities we serve, we seek training opportunities with community health organizations and residencies that are improving access to medical care in our area. Programs must have an existing training agreement with KP Washington before scheduling visiting rotations.

Shadowing

Observers join us at all stages of their education. Most are students fulfilling observation hours before applying to a professional training program. Finalists for job openings in the Washington Permanente Medical Group are also welcome to observe in the department they're considering.

Currently, shadowing for learners under the age of 18 students is limited to non-surgical areas. 

SHADOWING GUIDELINES

  • Shadows who have identified a physician or pa must get their agreement to host before filling out our shadowing application. Choose shadowing dates that are at least 1 month in the future.
  • Carefully check the vaccination requirements in our shadowing application and catch up on vaccinations before you apply.
  • Allow 3 weeks for shadowing application review. We will respond with an approval e-mail or request additional information if needed.
  • Students under 18 need a legal guardian’s approval and signature to participate in shadowing.
